X-rays in Pregnancy: Are they safe?

While people are often concerned about the use of x-ray imaging during pregnancy, the radiation dosage from a single x-ray (or x-ray series) is significantly lower than that which causes fetal harm. This is why pregnant people should have access to all medically indicated x-rays (including dental x-rays) with proper shielding. Access to x-ray imaging, necessary for the health of the pregnant person, should not be withheld over concern about the effects of radiation. All risks and benefits should be discussed with a physician, since often a missed or delayed diagnosis can pose greater risks than the minimal exposure to radiation.

When imaging is required, technicians should place double layers of abdominal shielding and thyroid shielding (when these areas are not the region needing evaluation), for increased safety.
